Both intimate and generous, these poems celebrate the cycle of the seasons, of death and rebirth: snapping turtles lay their eggs and new ones hatch;  a ruffed grouse drums his spring mating dance. Memory is central: a mother's lost face; a father's voice that "plumbed the marrow of poetry as tenderly / as if a darling had crept into his arms"; a wife's "rueful eyes, cornflower blue." And the poet pays tribute to the literary life--to reading, to the precise moment a word rises to consciousness, to getting over Robert Frost, to the mind of Sylvia Plath.  

These are poems that expand time for us and deepen place, whether Davison is taking us on a path along a limestone cliff under canopies of holly and ivy, or is revisiting the instant while recovering from surgery when it becomes clear he is going to heal.  "To learn poetry," Davison writes in his foreword, "we need to take poems into our breath and blood, and that requires us to hear them as we read them, to learn to read with all the senses, especially with the ear." Breathing Room gives us a splendid array of poems that we want to read with all our senses.

After more than 35 years of poetry collections, memoirs, criticism and editorial work, Davison announces that the poems of his 11th collection "mostly assume a single poetic form," one he borrows from the late work of a greater ombudsman, William Carlos Williams. But where Williams's achieves an intuitive elegance through triadic-footed tercets that matched the breath, Davison's free verse tends to go slack along with the material it carries, like the old pal the speaker catches "calculating/ whether life with her might not be/ very convenient, considering her parent's/ money." More at home as a naturalist than a nostalgic storyteller, Davison strikes a keener music when strolling through a "Seaside Summer Quarry" ("Sentried by sabers of iris,/ bared granite rocks/ jut up// from the soft starry beds of/ emerald moss") or observing how "Falling Water" will join "its first// brook and amble off into the yielding/ soft-shouldered marsh past fat roots of/ lilies to linger among the slick fronds// of algae paddled by ducks." Davison, however, is more prosaic when taking on the relationship of Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath, whether problematically adopting Plath herself as the speaker in "Sorry" ("When I woke up my cheek was full of maggots./ In the hospital they broke my head/ with lightning bolts. Everyone was so kind.") or, even more presumptuously, collaging snippets from some of the couple's more famous poems (Hughes's "Lovesong" and Plath's "Daddy" and "Edge") in a "Ballad" commemorating their "immortal mismarriage,/ their language// splintered and splayed/ in the throes/ of brutality." The effect is not cathartic, transgressive or celebratory in any sense. Davison opens his book with "No Escape" and closes it with the very same poem (only in italics), but readers may have already gone out the back by then. (Sept.)

"Poetry composes, not as modern Western music often does but for the human breath," says Davison, an award-winning poet and editor of the Atlantic Monthly. Nothing revelatory here: Charles Olson put forth a nearly identical thesis in 1950. The poems feel equally staid: Davison's memories of childhood, family, and lost loves are of passing interest, and the moment he veers from specific events, the poems deteriorate into trite generalizations, as when they're addressed to a distant "you." Other pieces pontificate, while still others, such as "Prayer to the Verb," are too whimsical to be considered serious. Forays into nature are ambitious (as in two poems adopting the snapping turtle's voice) but once again uninsightful and disappointing. Despite ten previous books of poetry, Davison has had more influence as an editor than a poet. I've read a few books on oil painting, and this one is my favorite, hands down. You know that feeling when you're in the art store, selecting supplies and making discoveries, and you look up and realize half the day has gone by? Well, just be sure to set aside some reading time for this when you don't have an urgent project going, because...Although there is at least one other book that calls itself an oil painting encyclopedia (and this one does not), this book has more factual, up-to-date, and helpful information about oil painting tools, supplies, mediums, etc., and how and when to use each of them than any other I've found. Plus the paintings and demonstrations in this book so beautifully illustrate those usages, it was easy for me to see which particular paints and mediums I should try next to complement and grow my own style--and I was deeply inspired to do so. It felt like getting an artist-led tour through the art store, with demos along the way, and pre-printed cliff notes.One word of warning: this book may lead to large purchases of oil paints and mediums! You WILL want to try new things. :DI was sad to come to the end of this book, but I have already found myself going back and referring to sections and passages multiple times, as the information is densely-packed, so there's more you will get out of it after the initial reading, or after your own experiments and efforts. The more you learn and try, the more it will grow with you over time.

Best beginning painting book I've owned, and as a professor and painter I've owned a lot. Covers glazing particularly well, and is suited for students. I will start requiring this to be my classroom text for my painting classes moving forward.

Oils are quite different from water media from beginning to end. This reference/technique bookprovides detailed description of each part of the process. For example; oil sticks (not oil pastels)can be combined with oil paint, under painting in acrylic provides a value study to build on, glazingtechniques are clearly described. If you can, just check out the table of contents to see howcomplete a reference this is. I have only two oil reference books; this book and Oil Painting byCharles Sovek. This is all the reference I've needed to begin a serious study of the medium.

I love the materials knowledge & applications that are given at the first half of this reference book. I, however, agree with another customer's assertion that the remaining part of the book was demo related, but I like the list of suppliers near the end towards the index section. I am happy that I now own this book as with my other in-depth reference of artist's materials & supplies information that I wished I had gotten a few years ago.

Great resource guide and teaching of techniques. Well written and well represented. A good teacher is a great thing and this book is just that...a good teacher.

I love this book. I checked it out at the library so many times that I finally broke down and bought my own copy and I'm so glad I did. I've been painting for years but this book continues to teach me things. It has the best explanation of glazing techniques that I've found. I'd never had the confidence to attempt glazing, mostly because I didn't understand how it was done, but this book inspired me to give it a try and so far, I'm enthralled. It also has in-depth information on oil mediums, grounds, paints, brushes, just about anything you want to know about oil painting materials. The section on mediums alone is worth the price I paid for the book. I have several shelves full of art how-to books, but this one is my absolute favorite.

A great book. Its full of information past and present on pigment performance, historical uses, toxicity, combinations, and company profiles. It also explains supports, mediums, and the pros and cons of each. I haven't listed everything it offers but its worth a buy if you area hobbies or a pro interested in the longevity of your work.

Kibrik examines the cross-linguistic aspects of reference and the typology of referential devices, including referring expressions per se, such as free and bound pronouns, and referential aids that help to tell apart the concurrently activated entities. This discussion is based on the data from about 200 languages from around the world. He then proposes a comprehensive model of referential choice, in which he draws on concepts from cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistics, cognitive psychology, and cognitive neuroscience, and applies this to Russian and English. He also draws together his empirical analyses in order to examine what light his analysis of discourse can shed on the way information is processed in working memory. In the final part of the book Andrej Kibrik offers a wider perspective, including deixis, referential aspects of gesticulation and signed languages.
